Why Adelaide is built for outdoor kitchens

Adelaide’s climate is among the most outdoor-cookable in Australia — long warm summers, mild autumns, dry shoulder seasons, and a year-round entertainer culture. The Mediterranean Adelaide-Hills wine-region pattern, the coastal Fleurieu lifestyle, and the eastern-suburbs entertainer-deck culture all justify serious outdoor cooking infrastructure.

Search demand reflects it — outdoor kitchens draw over 18,000 monthly searches Australia-wide, with relatively few Adelaide operators specialising. We do.

Four design tiers

Outdoor kitchens scale across four standard tiers. We brief you in person but the practical scope:

Tier 1 — Built-in BBQ bench ($5,000 to $12,000)

A single-bench install around a built-in BBQ. Stainless cabinetry below for cylinder storage, basic prep zone, single power outlet, no sink. Suits a courtyard, deck or compact alfresco. Two to three days on-site install.

Tier 2 — Full prep zone ($12,000 to $22,000)

L-shape bench around the BBQ, full storage cabinetry, second prep bench with cutting surface, basic sink (cold water only), under-bench fridge niche. Power outlets and weatherproof lighting. Pergola or weather cover assumed. Five to seven days on-site install.

Tier 3 — Fully fitted alfresco ($22,000 to $35,000)

Full L or U-shape outdoor kitchen — built-in BBQ, side-burner, pizza oven option, sink with hot and cold, undercounter fridge, weatherproof cabinetry, premium porcelain or sintered stone bench, full lighting circuit, gas plumbing. Pergola fully integrated. One to two weeks on-site install.

Tier 4 — Integrated indoor-outdoor ($35,000+)

Full alfresco kitchen connected to the indoor kitchen by sliding bi-fold doors or a stacker, with a continuous bench line, integrated rangehood ventilation, premium appliance package (Beefeater, Twin Eagles, Lynx), pizza oven, smoker, kegerator, full bar setup. Two-plus weeks on-site install.

What we build with — weatherproof materials

Outdoor kitchen cabinetry can’t be built from indoor kitchen materials. UV exposure, rain ingress, summer heat (up to 60°C inside an enclosed cabinet on a 40°C day) and winter overnight cold all attack standard cabinetry. What we use:

  • Marine-grade plywood (BS 1088 standard). The traditional outdoor cabinetry substrate. Resists moisture, doesn’t delaminate, takes a paint or seal finish.
  • Polymer cabinetry (Trex, Polyboard, marine-grade composite). UV-stable, fully waterproof, no sealing required. Premium spec.
  • 316-grade stainless steel cabinetry. The most durable — coastal-rated, fireproof, expensive. Common in Tier 3 and Tier 4 builds.
  • Powder-coated aluminium frame. Cost-saving alternative for non-coastal builds.
  • Hardware — marine-grade stainless or solid brass. Standard chrome and zinc-plated hardware fails inside two summers in Adelaide.

What we put on top — UV-rated benchtops

Outdoor benchtops carry different requirements from indoor. The materials that perform:

  • Porcelain. UV-stable, heat-resistant, stain-resistant, frost-tolerant. The most common outdoor-rated bench material.
  • Sintered stone (Dekton, Lapitec, Neolith). Industrial-grade durable, fully UV-stable, scratch and stain resistant. Premium spec.
  • Granite. Natural stone, UV-stable, classic look. Requires sealing.
  • Concrete (sealed). Custom-cast for distinctive look. Requires re-sealing every 3 to 5 years.

What we don’t install outside — quartz (resin binder degrades under UV), marble (stains and weathers badly), laminate (delaminates within 12 months).

Council approvals — what’s involved

Outdoor kitchens often need council approval depending on scope:

  • Bench-only builds within an existing pergola or covered alfresco — usually no consent required.
  • Pergola or shade structure with attached cabinetry — typically requires building rules consent, may need development plan consent depending on size and zoning.
  • Plumbing and gas connections — require licensed plumber sign-off and gas certifier; the plumbing approval is built into the trade booking.
  • Bushfire-zone properties (BAL-rated) in the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu hills, or foothills — additional CFS-overlay considerations on materials, ember protection and clearances.
  • Heritage zones (NPSP, City of Burnside, City of Unley) — material and structure choices may need character-impact assessment.

We coordinate the development application, the building rules consent and the certifier sign-off as part of the project. You don’t run between council, certifier and trades yourself.

Where we work

Outdoor kitchens across:

  • Eastern suburbs — entertainer-deck culture, premium Burnside and Norwood acreage.
  • Western and coastal — Glenelg, Henley Beach, Brighton, West Lakes — coastal salt-air considerations on hardware and finishes.
  • Adelaide Hills — Stirling, Aldgate, Mount Barker, Hahndorf — acreage entertainer kitchens with bushfire-zone CFS BAL ratings on outdoor cooking.
  • Fleurieu Peninsula — McLaren Vale, Willunga, Victor Harbor — sea-change entertainer kitchens, cellar-door commercial outdoor cooking.

Cross-trade considerations

Outdoor kitchens attract pests — ants, wasps, possums and rodents are all drawn to outdoor food preparation zones. Pre-build pest-proofing of the alfresco area saves problems later; for ongoing pest pressure around outdoor cooking, pest management for Adelaide homes handles ant trails, wasp nests and rodent harbourage in pergola and alfresco zones.

If your outdoor-kitchen build involves clearing a tree or substantial branch removal first, Adelaide tree services is the trade partner we work with.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an outdoor kitchen build take?

Tier 1 built-in BBQ bench — two to three days on-site. Tier 2 full prep zone — five to seven days. Tier 3 fully fitted alfresco — one to two weeks. Tier 4 integrated indoor-outdoor — two-plus weeks. Council approval lead times add four to twelve weeks where applicable.

Do I need council approval?

Bench-only builds in an existing covered alfresco — usually not. New pergola or shade structure with attached cabinetry — usually yes. Plumbing and gas connections — always require licensed sign-off. We coordinate every approval as part of the project.

What about bushfire-zone properties?

Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu hills properties on bushfire-zone (BAL-rated) blocks have additional considerations — material specifications, ember protection, clearances from vegetation, gas-cylinder placement. We work to the CFS overlay applicable to your block and book a bushfire consultant where the rating warrants.

Can I add an outdoor kitchen to an existing alfresco?

Yes — about 70% of our outdoor kitchens are retrofits to existing alfrescos and pergolas. The constraints are space, services (gas, water, power), the existing roof or shade structure, and council overlay where applicable.

What benchtop is best for outdoors?

Porcelain or sintered stone — both are UV-stable, heat-tolerant, and stain-resistant. Granite is the natural-stone option. Quartz, marble and laminate don’t survive Adelaide summers and we don’t install them outside.

What’s the warranty on an outdoor kitchen?

Seven years on cabinetry as standard. Hardware (Hettich, Blum, marine-grade stainless) carries the manufacturer warranty in addition. Benchtops carry the stone fabricator’s warranty. Outdoor-specific warranty terms depend on the cover provided — fully covered alfresco vs partially exposed bench.
