Laundry as utility, laundry as room
Two ways to think about a laundry cabinetry job. The utility laundry is functional — sink, washing machine and dryer space, basic storage, get in and out. The laundry-as-room treats the space as a real room of the house — a bench you’d actually use, full storage, drying integration, daylight, finishes that match the kitchen rather than the garage.
Most Adelaide laundry-cabinetry buyers come to us either to fix a tired 1990s laundry or to build a serious one as part of a kitchen renovation. We brief the choice at consultation and quote both options where it’s not obvious.

Three layouts that work in Adelaide laundries
Most Adelaide laundries fit one of three patterns:
Single-wall
The smallest functional layout. Washing machine, dryer (stacked or side-by-side), sink with under-bench cabinetry, overhead cabinets, a small bench. Suits laundry alcoves under 4 square metres. Common in 1990s townhouses and apartments.
L-shape
Two adjacent walls of cabinetry. Wash zone on one wall, dry-and-fold zone on the other. Sink in the corner or one of the runs. Most common for medium laundries (4 to 8 square metres).
Galley
Two parallel walls of cabinetry, walk-through corridor. Premium spec — wash on one wall, dry-and-fold on the other, mid-corridor for sorting and ironing. Suits laundries 8+ square metres.
What goes inside
A custom laundry cabinetry build covers more than just doors and a bench:
- Bench surface. Stone (matched to kitchen), laminate (cost saving), timber (premium aesthetic). Stone is most common in mid-tier and premium builds.
- Sink and tub. A laundry tub (deeper than a kitchen sink, room for hand-washing) or a flush-mount sink with separate hand-wash basin in larger builds.
- Pull-out laundry hampers. Concealed in cabinetry, sorted by white-coloured-darks-delicates.
- Drying integration. Pull-out drying rack, pull-down ceiling-mount airer, wall-mount fold-down drying frame, vented dryer cabinet, heat-pump dryer integrated into cabinetry.
- Iron and ironing-board storage. Pull-out drawer-mounted ironing board, wall-mount cupboard, integrated steam-station shelf.
- Cleaning-supply storage. Tall pull-outs with lockable child-safe latches.
- Pet-feeding zone (optional). Pull-out pet bowls, kibble storage, dog-grooming hand-shower.
- Lighting. LED strip under bench overhang, ceiling LED for the work zone.
Three cost bands — Adelaide laundry cabinetry pricing
Band 1 — Single-wall utility: $3,500 to $7,000
Single-wall layout, laminate bench, basic cabinetry, sink, overhead cabinets. Three to four weeks fabrication, one to two days install.
Band 2 — L-shape full laundry: $7,000 to $14,000
L-shape with stone or premium laminate bench, full pull-out hampers, drying integration, mid-spec hardware. Five to six weeks fabrication, two to three days install.
Band 3 — Galley laundry-as-room: $14,000 to $25,000+
Galley layout with stone bench, full integrated drying, premium cabinetry matched to the kitchen, full lighting circuit, pet-feeding or ironing-station integration. Six to eight weeks fabrication, three to four days install.
Common Adelaide laundry contexts
Laundry cabinetry retrofits land in three common contexts:
- 1990s-2000s suburban laundries. Tired existing cabinetry, working layout, just needs new doors, new bench and updated hardware. Refresh job in band 1 or band 2.
- Heritage villa rear-extension laundries. Norwood, Burnside, Unley, Walkerville. Often the laundry is part of a rear-extension renovation that includes the kitchen and a butler’s pantry — built as one job, matched cabinetry across all three rooms.
- New-build laundry fit-outs. Mawson Lakes, Mount Barker, Adelaide Hills. Built to architect’s drawings, full custom from slab.

Frequently asked questions
What’s the minimum size for a workable laundry?
A single-wall utility laundry needs minimum about 1,200mm × 1,800mm — room for a washing machine, dryer (stacked), sink and a small bench. Below that you’re choosing between functions rather than fitting them all.
Stone or laminate bench?
Stone if the laundry is visible from a living area or part of a matched-cabinetry package. Laminate is fine for hidden utility laundries — saves about $1,500 to $3,000 over stone, and modern laminates are durable and stain-resistant.
Can the laundry match the kitchen?
Yes — about half our laundry cabinetry jobs are built as part of a matched kitchen-and-laundry package. Same door colour, same hardware, same bench material. The visual continuity reads as a single design rather than two separate renovations.
Do I need a plumber as part of the job?
Yes — sink, tub, washing-machine connections and dryer venting all require licensed plumber and electrician sign-off. We coordinate the trades as part of the project booking.
Can you add laundry capacity to a kitchen butler’s pantry?
Sometimes. A combined laundry-pantry (Euro-laundry) works in townhouses and apartments where space is constrained. We don’t recommend it for entertaining-scale homes — the wash-and-dry noise and humidity collide with food prep.
What’s the lead time?
Single-wall utility — three to four weeks fabrication, one to two days install. L-shape — five to six weeks. Galley — six to eight weeks. Install on-site — one to four days depending on scope.
